How to Be a Better Writer

“How do you know your writing is good?”

I asked my writer’s circle friends this during one of our weekly meetings and was so inspired by the answers, I had to write about it!

Laura, who are you to even run a writer’s circle? If a ‘real’ writer read your stuff they’d probably tear it to pieces.

My inner critic is harsh. But after authoring nine books and hundreds of blogs, publishing more than 40 Amazon bestselling books with over 400 collaborating authors, and building an empire focused on writing, what I do know is that I definitely know what good writing is to me.

And isn’t that the point?

“Laura, if it wasn’t for you I wouldn’t be able to connect to my imagination and have the desire to write words for others to read.”

That was awesome to hear. I love to inspire people to write. I especially love when first-time writers publish their words and receive not only rave reviews, but notes from people whose lives were changed because of them.

Was the writing in those books “good?”

Do I care?

A little. But not as much as I care about someone’s life being changed.

What I do care about is that my brave healers write their hearts and souls onto the pages of our books, carry out their mission to help people, and leave the legacy they hoped to leave.

And while we’re at it, since most of us love the art and craft of writing, I also love to help people become better writers. Because you might as well give the reader a great reading experience while you’re helping them live an awesome life, right?

The most important thing I’ll share from the discussion with my writer friends was: “You have to know your ideal reader and what is good writing for them.”

I’m sure famous writers could come together and make an agreed upon list of what constitutes good writing, but what I want my writers to know is depending on your audience, that answer will change. Then what will you do?

Different aspects and styles of writing turn different people on for different reasons. What you want is for people to be pulled into your material to the point they find themselves at the end, and…
