Your business is built on a foundation of powerful words, both written and spoken. When you get it right, it feels badass. When you get it wrong you wonder why nobody is reading or clicking on your stuff.
And that sucks, big time.
I absolutely love helping my entrepreneur colleagues shine with their writing. Like it totally turns me on to see you share something that lights you up in a way that makes you feel worthy and brave. It turns me on even more when your ideal clients see or hear you in a bigger way for the first time, and your business grows as a result.
I had a taste of this when I helped one of my myofascial release colleagues re-write a blog she was working on to introduce her healing business to the world and she told me she cried when she read it. Yes! Your why should make you cry!
Let’s get to shining with words so real, raw, powerful and authentic your ideal clients come back again and again to read what you’ve written and want to be a part of your world.
Everybody’s a writer. Just like everyone’s a healer and an artist. The problem is you don’t feel good enough. And your fear of not-good-enough is boring.
If you write, you’re a writer. If you run a business you’re automatically going to have to build your skill set around writing because it’s part of how you express yourself and your business message to the world.
I mean, you can spend dollars and hire someone to do it for you. And in some cases, like your bio or about page, this might be money well spent. But there’s nothing more empowering than being able to express your authentic voice without someone else doing it for you. And to express it in a way that is actually effective.
So let’s up-level your writing today and you can walk away feeling better than good-enough when it comes to writing for your business and leaving your legacy with those brave words.
Here are the five biggest mistakes you’re making with your business writing:
- You’re not writing consistently for whatever reason; you don’t feel it’s good enough, you don’t have time to post, you’re unclear about what you want to write.
- You’re not owning your expertise and sharing what you know with your audience.
- You’re not sharing personal stories in your writing.
- You’re writing like a robot.
- You don’t feel anything when you write.
Honestly five is only a partial list, but if you tackle even a few of these issues your writing is going to start to shine in a way you never thought possible, mostly because you’ll feel so good about it you’ll want to share it!
So let’s fix this stuff!
I don’t care if you think you’re good enough or not — you must practice. Write stuff. Post it. Publish it. Believe me, some writing in terms of getting your message out there is better than no writing. When you don’t write and share consistently it’s very easy for the mojo to fade and be finding yourself doing nothing again. Don’t let that happen.
Own your fucking expertise
Sorry for the swear, but I’ve seen brilliant, talented, gifted and made-to-heal-the-world entrepreneurs stuck in the mindset that they’re not ready to share their stuff because they just need to finish up that one more degree, or certification, or course, or program. Ugh. Stop it. You’re always one step ahead of someone who needs your information desperately to change their life. Stop letting your lack of perfection paralyze you. Just stop.
Get more personal
The more personal the more universal, plus, this is a know, like and trust thing. If you’re not sharing the real you then I’m not attracted to you because you’re not being real. I can feel it. And frankly, your writing is a little bland if you don’t add your unique story and personality to it. Please, get personal. There’s no TMI here. We need all of you, the mess, the ugly, the failures, the mistakes, because it gives us permission to be ourselves, just like we are. It makes you more approachable. It helps us know you’re human.
Write like you talk
Robotic writing is very stiff. It is so stiff that it is hard to show you an example because I cringe when I try to write like this. (Notice what I did there?) Here’s that sentence another way: Robotic writing’s so stiff it’s hard to show you how without cringing. I did a couple things here. I shortened the sentence by taking out words that were unnecessary and I added conjunctions. One of your best editing tools is to read your stuff out loud and look for where you can be clearer and add the conjunctions, just like you talk.
OMG please feel something
Writing for your business can be difficult, boring, tiring, nerve-wracking etc…but, please, seriously think about this. If you’re feeling frustrated, bored, tired or nervous when you write stuff you’re wanting others to be excited about, how do you think they’ll feel? Bored and tired! What I want you to do is think about how you want them to feel as a result of reading what you’re writing. Would you like them to feel inspired, hopeful, excited, moved into action? Cool, then conjure that up while you’re writing!
So…what are your excuses for not getting the awesome blogs, books, website copy and other kinds of writing into the world? Lay them on me in the comments and I’ll help you with some solutions!
