“I don’t want to get my hopes up, you know?” How many times has someone said this to you? How many times have you said it? Actually getting your hopes up is exactly what you need to do to flip the switch on your inner critic and start creating the life you crave. Here are three reasons to get your hopes up!
- Getting into the feeling state of hope and excitement for what you desire is exactly the energy you need to create those things.
- Giving yourself permission to feel hopeful and positive feels better and is a more fun way to live.
- Feeling hopeful isn’t the problem here; attaching to it is.
Dampening down your expectations so you’re not disappointed later isn’t a very fun way to live. But maybe it seems more responsible, appropriate or what you’re supposed to do.
If you’ve been reading any of my stuff lately you know I’m going to knock you out of that little, suffocating box you’re locking yourself in and ask you to take some risks here. It’s your life we’re talking about. It’s time to get a little more badass on it!
First of all everything is awareness and energy. What do you think the energy of “Don’t get your hopes up,” is? It’s negative, pessimistic and generally numb and dampened down. It’s low vibe and low vibe isn’t going to get you where you want to go.
The energy of manifesting the life you crave is high vibe. Hope is high vibe. It has an excited, positive, optimistic, on-purpose energy. I’ll take some of that, thank you very much.
Secondly, when you allow yourself to feel hopeful it just feels better in general. It’s okay to hope, even expect things to go a certain way. And while you’re waiting for the outcome, you might as well imagine the best, instead of the worst; it will just be more fun to live that way.
Which gets me to the last point — the problem isn’t about the feeling, it’s about attaching to the outcomes. We must instead feel the feelings of hope, gratitude, joy and love and then detach from whatever outcome occurs. Truth is we don’t know where that outcome will redirect us. If we label the outcomes as bad or good, without really knowing the whole story or the bigger picture, we suffer.
When you’re inner critic pipes up, listen closely to those old, conditioned, unhelpful tapes running again and make a different choice this time. If she’s saying, “Don’t get your hopes up. You know what happened the last time you did that; you were really disappointed,” then you might just shut her down and have a little conversation. Say, “Hey, thanks for your concern, but I got this.” And continue to conjure up the feeling of hope, without adding any meaning to what the outcome might be.
This practice of awareness is going to change everything. It will take some practice to get better and faster at shutting those inner critic voices down, and to replace the messages with something more aligned and helpful.
Here are some suggestions of positive, on-purpose mantras you can incorporate when your inner critic is trying to have her way with you. Try saying to yourself:
I love feeling hopeful, no matter what happens.
I don’t know what the outcome will be, but in the meantime I’m feeling positive and hopeful.
What else is possible here?
I’m so happy and grateful that everything is turning out for my best and highest good.
I’m so grateful for _____ (fill in the blank).
